How to Make a Hurricane Supply Kit
As Laura enters the Gulf of Mexico, with the Houston metro area as a possible target, we wanted to send you a reminder of how to build or replenish your Home Hurricane Emergency Kit.
Hurricane season is from June 1st to November 1st every year. Here are some suggestions to help you prepare yourself and your home, as well as your supplies, in case you are affected by weather or power outages:
1. Fill up all vehicle gas tanks. Sometimes power outages or downed power lines can cause gas station closures for multiple days.
2. Make sure you have prescriptions/contact lenses or other medical items filled and that you have enough to get you through 14 days.
3. Charge all devices (laptops, phones, tablets) and obtain backup battery chargers (portable chargers) in the event of extended power outage. Some hurricanes in our area have caused power outages for up to 3 weeks.
4. Assemble supplies. You will need supplies not just for storm day, but for the potential aftermath. Have enough non-perishable food and water to last at least 3 days. You may need extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights/batteries or candles.
5. Take a walk around your property and vehicles. Bring anything inside that could get tossed around or broken by hurricane-force winds. Make sure to park your cars in the highest area possible. If you live in an apartment building or condo, park on the higher floors (3 or higher).
6. Have a place in your home that you can go to in the event of tornado watch or warning. This is usually a first floor, interior room or closet with no windows.
We hope this information is helpful. Here is a detailed checklist if you want to make a supply kit! If you have a pool, here is some helpful information on how to prepare your pool.
